This week's topic was planning for disaster. It really got me thinking about our computers at home. My husband and I both have laptops, and we do back them up but probably not as often as we should. I was very faithful about backing things up while we were working on Action Research because I think I would have "died" had I lost all that work. Since I finished that, however, I have been a little lax again.
Time Machine was mentioned in class, and as a result, I went home and talked to my husband about it. We did a little research and decided that is the way we want to go for our laptops. I just missed Leopard when I bought my new laptop for this MEIT program so Time Machine didn't come with mine. Right now, we are in the process of deciding which external hard drive to get. Then we will upgrade to Leopard.
It will be a relief to know that if something happens to one of the computers, we will have everything safe, especially all of our pictures.

On one hand, I totally agree that backing things up is really important, but I think there are more cost-effective ways like simply burning all of your pictures on to a CD or DVD once every two months or so. In the end, the chance of losing every document, picture, and song we have should provide an extra reason to live in the moment. I once faced that very risk when I lived in Japan and my laptop crashed. Fortunately, I had backed up nearly everything on an external hard drive a couple weeks earlier so the loss wasn't that great. In the meantime, enjoy every single day.
I agree with you, Lori, about back ups and how little I knew. I haven't backed up anything, and my husband is in IT! I am looking for an external hard drive now.
As for pictures, DVDs are the way to go vs. CDs for keeping them for years to come.
I have Time Machine on my new Mac laptop, but I haven't set it up yet. When I was researching external hard drives for my Disaster Data Recovery assignment, I looked into Apple's Time Capsule, which seems great because it works hand-in-hand with Time Machine, but it's also ridiculously expensive! I found another external hard drive called the Iomega eGo Portable Hard Drive Mac Edition. It's 500 GB, has good reviews, and seems reasonably priced at $150. I already have an external hard drive, but when I attempted to set up Time Machine with it, it said it needed to erase it first (ugh, scary!), so I quickly cancelled that! Good luck on your search! Let me know if you find a good one!
I am not sure why it never occured to me to backup my files. A few years ago this would not have been a big problem for me, but now a it would be. I am in the process of getting an external hard drive set up. I know there are online services, but I am not comfortable with this method. I think that I am going to do what Kris mentioned and burn pics to CD. Now I need a burner. :)
